WHAT IS

MATCHA

DESCRIPTION

Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that has its origins in Japanese tea culture. It is made from shade-grown tea leaves known as tencha, which are ground into a fine powder.

Matcha is known for its unique flavor profile, which can range from grassy and vegetal to slightly sweet and umami-rich. It also contains a higher concentration of nutrients compared to steeped green tea because you are consuming the whole ground tea leaves rather than just an infusion of the leaves.

Due to its popularity and potential health benefits, matcha has been incorporated into various culinary creations beyond the traditional preparation. You can find matcha-flavored desserts, beverages, and even savory dishes in many parts of the world.

FUNCTIONALITY

  1. Rich in Antioxidants: Matcha is packed with antioxidants, including catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules linked to various chronic diseases and aging.

  2. Boosts Brain Function: Matcha contains caffeine, which can provide a mild energy boost and improve alertness. However, unlike coffee, matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine is thought to enhance cognitive function, attention, and mood.

  3. Supports Metabolism: Some research suggests that the combination of catechins and caffeine in matcha may help increase metabolic rate and promote fat oxidation, potentially aiding in weight management.

  4. Heart Health: Regular consumption of green tea, including matcha, has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. It may help lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol) and improve overall heart health.

  5. Cancer Prevention: The antioxidants in matcha, especially EGCG, have been studied for their potential to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and protect cells from DNA damage. However, more research is needed to fully understand the extent of these effects.

  6. Blood Sugar Regulation: Some studies suggest that green tea consumption, including matcha, may help improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes or those at risk.

  7. Calming Effect: The presence of L-theanine in matcha has been linked to a calming and relaxing effect. This amino acid can counteract the jittery feeling often associated with caffeine consumption, promoting a sense of relaxation and focus.

  8. Dental Health: Certain compounds in green tea, such as catechins, have antibacterial properties that may help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, potentially contributing to improved oral health and reducing the risk of cavities.

  9. Skin Health: Some research suggests that the antioxidants in matcha may help protect the skin from UV damage, promote skin health, and slow down the signs of aging. Matcha is sometimes used in skincare products for its potential benefits.
